Insider info

1 analyst read · 138 MMA · our paraphrase, never his words
vs Nikolas Motta lean UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Song · September 14, 2022

Lean, using his own verb: he says he will lean VanCamp, and the price is inside the pick's run-up -- the selection is presented as taking an underdog, which the bar reads as caution, not conviction. He leaves the other man a live route in the same passage, crediting him with a real chance of winning, and he tells viewers not to size this up, saying he would not 'go wild' on it. The supporting clause is hedged itself: range and grappling give VanCamp only 'the slightest bit' more room than he had last time out, a fight he grades no better than okay. The closers are soft -- 'some upside', a stylistically good spot -- and the chapter finishes by setting the condition on which he would start fading the man he just picked, rather than by closing the fight.

Six foot two in a lightweight division, and the reach is the whole of his case: he expects VanCamp to land on a shorter man before that man can land back, and he gives him the grappling advantage on top of it. He handles the last appearance carefully -- a short-notice step up to welterweight that ended in a knockout -- and reads it as circumstance rather than evidence, saying he looked fine while it lasted and did not look bad. His view is that this is a better stylistic spot, back at his own weight. He also draws a line: another stoppage loss and he stops backing him.

StrengthA long frame for the weight at six foot two, and he treats that range as the decisive edge in this matchup.
StrengthHe gives him the better of it on the mat, and wants to see the grappling used more than it has been.
StrengthHe reads the last defeat as a short-notice step up a division rather than a mark against him, and says he was not out of his depth in it.
WeaknessComes in off a knockout defeat, and he says another stoppage would make him unbackable from then on.
WeaknessHe will not claim VanCamp is the better striker -- only that he is not out of place on the feet.
WeaknessThe welterweight outings on the regional scene are an aside; he is clear this man's division is lightweight.
